As we find ourselves in the season of Ordinary Time, I’ve been reflecting on how we can nurture our children’s spiritual growth. Like the seeds we plant in our gardens, our children’s faith needs to be tended, watered, and given plenty of sunshine to flourish. And one of the best ways to do this is through Christian children’s books.

These books, filled with stories of God’s love, plant the seeds of faith in their hearts. They help our children understand the teachings of the Lord in a language they can understand and are also like the gentle rain that nourishes the seeds.

On June 11th, we celebrate the Feast of St. Barnabas, a true pioneer of the early church. St. Barnabas may not be as well known as Peter or Paul, but his faithfulness, generosity, and encouragement changed the course of the Church. He reminds us that sometimes the most powerful witness comes not from preaching, but from believing in others, walking beside them, and quietly helping them grow in Christ.

There’s a charming tradition from Glastonbury, England, that a walnut tree in the abbey churchyard would only bud on St. Barnabas’ Day. Celebrate with a simple walnut streusel coffee cake, perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea as you remember this faithful saint.

This season, which follows the great feasts of Easter, is not a time of lesser importance but rather a time of deepening, an invitation to live out the mysteries we have just celebrated. The liturgical calendar is not simply a cycle of remembrance, but a path of formation, shaping us into a people who carry Christ’s presence into the world. Ordinary Time, then, is the season in which we learn to walk as disciples, growing in faith, hope, and love.

Let’s make the best banana pudding you’ll ever try!

I’m an adventurous eater and I’m from the South so I should love banana pudding. But it is one of the few things that I will not touch. Maybe it’s the boxed banana pudding with the artificial banana flavor, the eggy meringue or the chemically Cool Whip. Who knows but it’s gross. 🤢

I really wanted to try my hand at a truly homemade banana pudding (minus the Nilla wafers - I don’t have that much time on my hands!) and I am so pleased with the results!

Rich homemade vanilla custard and whipped cream plus a kick of sour cream to cut the sweet take it to the next level! This is a banana pudding I can get behind!

We are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus for 50 days! 50 days of feasting and celebrating! One of the ways I love to celebrate the Easter season is with flowers.

Lately, I’ve seen all of these gorgeous pictures of blossoming branches in vases in people’s homes.

Unfortunately, I live in a coastal area where we don’t have a lot of blossoming fruit trees, so I decided to make this tissue paper cherry blossom arrangement and create my own version of the blooming branches. Every time I walk past it, I’m reminded of the glorious resurrection that we are celebrating.

St. Philip and St. James were both early followers of Jesus and are considered to be two of Jesus’ twelve apostles but little is known about them beyond that. We celebrate them on the same day because even though they died at different times and in different places, their bodies were moved and brought to the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Rome.

A powerful and easy way to practice resurrection in my home is with flowers. I make sure to keep a bouquet or little mini bouquets on our kitchen table all through the season of Easter to remind us that we are celebrating.

Every time I walk through the room and see those flowers, I am immediately prompted to offer thanks and praise for all that was accomplished on my behalf through Jesus’ death and resurrection and I hope that the same is true for my husband and children as well!

For the little Easter flower arrangements that in the pictures, I used various sizes of canning or jelly jars, a bouquet of alstromerias from my grocery store, and a thrifted white tablecloth. Alstromerias are a very common flower bouquet sold in grocery stores. They are very inexpensive and when used by themselves, have a very sweet, simple look. I love them! Oh, and they last for a very long time!

Since the death and resurrection of Jesus is the pinnacle of our faith, there is an entire season set aside to celebrate it. The season of Easter is a time of feasting and merrymaking that lasts for 50 whole days!

One great way to celebrate Eastertide is through food. Just as Christmas has traditional foods like fruitcake and gingerbread, Easter has its own special treats. Strawberry shortcake is one of my family’s must-haves during Easter. It’s light, fresh, and so, so good! And the best part? It’s actually effortless to make! Add sugar to sliced strawberries, make a quick shortcake, whip up some homemade whipped cream, and layer. It’s super simple!

On Good Friday, we enter a period of profound reflection and reverence, pondering the immense weight of Christ’s sacrifice and the boundless depth of his love for us. Traditionally, in order to fully contemplate this pivotal moment in our salvation story, people fasted until after the Good Friday service.

In England, after the service, the fast was broken with Hot Cross Buns. They originated at Saint Alban’s Abbey in 1361 when the monks distributed them to the poor. The tradition spread to Christians throughout England and is the food associated with Good Friday to this day.

Maundy Thursday begins the sacred journey of the Easter Triduum (pronounced tree-do-um), the “Three Days” that span from sundown on Maundy Thursday to sundown on Easter Sunday. These are the holiest and most solemn days of the Christian year, drawing us into the heart of our faith.

On this night, we remember the Last Supper, the washing of the disciples’ feet, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, and Christ’s lonely vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane. It is a night filled with holy mystery, a quiet, reverent threshold into the power and sorrow of His Passion.

Knowing his hour had come, Jesus spent his final evening in intimate fellowship with his disciples, breaking bread, bending low to serve, and pouring out his love in word, action, and prayer.

Today is Palm Sunday!

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the holiest week of the liturgical year. During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus through his final days before his crucifixion. The tone of this week begins with joy as we remember his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Like the people in the Bible, we wave palm branches and shout “Hosanna,” proclaiming Jesus to be the “King of Kings.” We remember his ultimate victory over death. We also pray that we who bear these palm branches will “ever hail him as our King and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life” (Book of Common Prayer).

However, the day intertwines our joy with impending sorrow. The jubilation of Jesus’s arrival foreshadows the path to his crucifixion. We grow painfully aware of our fickle human nature, for the same voices that welcomed him at his coming would cry out for his crucifixion just a few days later. But we are also reminded of Jesus’s humility. He chose a path of peace and servitude over power and dominion, inviting us to reflect on the nature of true kingship and the kingdom of God.

Holy Week is almost here! Palm Sunday begins the week followed by Holy Monday.

According to the gospel of Matthew (Matthew 21:12-17), right after Jesus enters Jerusalem, he immediately goes to the temple. He drives out the money changers so it seems appropriate that the Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week are set aside for spring cleaning!

Here’s a great tradition for Palm Sunday, make Pax Cakes!

In England, in 1570, a local landowner grew frustrated with the parishioners in her church. They were not getting along with each other so she gave her priest money to buy shortbread cakes and ale to be consumed in church on Palm Sunday. Ha! The landowner hoped that the cakes and ale would ensure peace and reconciliation between neighbors before they took their Easter Communion the following Sunday.

These shortbread cookies are absolutely delicious and so easy to make! Y’all are gonna love them! And maybe they will bring a little bit of peace to your family!

After the long path of Lent, Holy Week invites us to walk with Christ through His Passion, death, and resurrection, not just by remembering what happened long ago, but by participating in it now, in real time. The Church gives us this week as a gift: not to rush through, but to dwell in.

One Easter symbol that often goes overlooked is the lamb. When I would see little stuffed lambs in the Easter section of our local store, I tended to think the symbol was about spring and new life. That’s partly true, but the lamb represents so much more.

The lamb represents Jesus, the lamb of God and our passover lamb, whose sacrifice takes away the sins of the world and reconciles us to God. So when we eat lamb on Easter, we are pointing to Christ and rejoicing in his gift to us!

Holy Week is almost here!

During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus through the final days before his crucifixion. We begin with joy as we remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. But soon we are reminded that the same voices that welcomed him at his coming would cry out for his crucifixion just a few days later.

Holy Week is a time of great sadness as we reflect on our own sin and our own rejection of Jesus as Lord of our lives

BUT it is also filled with a great hope because we know the whole story - that Jesus’ death is not final. We know that at the end of Holy Week comes Easter Sunday, the most glorious day of our lives! On this day, Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death forever and those that call upon his most precious name will be saved!
