Did you know that on January 18th, the Feast of the Confession of St. Peter, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins? During these eight days, Christians around the world, from various denominations, join together in prayer for the unity of Christians, to reflect together on scripture, to participate in jointly-organized worship services, and to share in acts of outreach and fellowship. It’s an incredible thing to participate in!

As we move through the season of Epiphany with its themes of revelation and growth, a beautiful way to mark and move through the time is by planting paperwhites.

Planting paperwhites is a quiet, contemplative activity, a way to pause and reflect on God’s ongoing work in our lives. It is also a wonderful opportunity to involve children, teaching them through hands-on experience about spiritual growth and the beauty of creation.

Twelfth Night or Eve of the Epiphany begins at sundown and is the beginning of the celebration of Epiphany. On this day, we celebrate the long journey that the wise men made and their final arrival to the child Jesus.

At the center of Twelfth Night celebrations is the Twelfth Night cake. Depending on the country, it is a simple cake with a dried bean inside. Whoever finds the bean in their piece of cake is crowned king or queen for the night and might also have duties assigned to them at a later celebration!

In many Spanish speaking countries, they eat a cake called Rosca de Reyes. Rosca de Reyes is a sweet bread shaped like a wreath, with candied fruit on top and a figurine of a baby Jesus baked inside. The person who finds the figurine is expected to host a party on Dia de la Candelaria or Candlemas which is celebrated on February 2nd.

In Spanish, “Rosca de Reyes” means “Kings Wreath.” The cake is rich in symbolism and is about the story of Mary and Joseph’s flight to Egypt to protect the infant Jesus from the slaughter of the innocents. The shape of the cake symbolizes the crown of King Herod from whom they were trying to hide the infant Jesus. The dried fruit placed on top are jewels in the crown. The figurine or bean in the cake represents baby Jesus in hiding.

Happy Feast of the Circumcision and Holy Name of Jesus!

It was a Jewish custom for newborn boys to be named and circumcised eight days after their birth. This practice, grounded in the covenant between God and Abraham, signified the child’s inclusion in God’s chosen people. For Jesus, this moment also marked the fulfillment of divine prophecy. The angel Gabriel had appeared to Mary, instructing her to name the child Jesus:

And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. —Luke 2:21

Make traditional Coventry God Cakes for the Feast of the Circumcision and Holy Name of Jesus. In Coventry, England, it is traditional to visit your godchild on this day and bring them “God-cakes.” God Cakes are little triangular cakes (in honor of the Trinity) with sweet filling. They are made from a rich shortcrust and a warm buttery spiced filling of lemon zest and raisins. They are SO good!

Today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents. It’s the special day set aside to remember all of the innocent children murdered by King Herod in order to keep Jesus from growing up and taking Herod’s throne.

It’s incredibly powerful that right after Christmas Day and the celebration of the birth of Christ, the Church dedicates a feast day to recognize those innocents who were murdered in response to Christ’s birth.

On Christmas Eve, we are suspended between two worlds - the world of darkness, sin, and death and the new world of light promised through God’s Messiah. On this day, the season of Advent draws to an end and the waiting and intentional preparation comes to a close. Christmas Eve is our last opportunity to heed the words of Saint John the Baptist to “prepare the way of the Lord.” That is why, traditionally, Christmas Eve is a day for confession. Although we seek on this day to continue to prepare our hearts through confession and introspection, it is hard to contain our excitement because we know what happens at the stroke of midnight - the dawn of a new age comes with the birth of a Savior who will ransom us from sin and death and bring us back to God!

The birth of Jesus is so incredible that the celebration cannot be contained in a single day. Christmastide or the 12 Days of Christmas is the full celebration of the birth of Christ. 12 days filled with joy and feasting, Christmas carols and visiting, gift giving and merriment.

Christmas, as it was traditionally celebrated, doesn’t end on December 25th—it begins there. The Christmas season, lasting 12 days until Epiphany, is a time of true celebration. All the preparation of Advent finds its fulfillment in these days, which are meant to be a joyful, extended feast.

When we let Christmas begin on December 25th, it becomes more than a single day of celebration—it unfolds as a season of wonder, joy, and thanksgiving. It’s an invitation to fully enjoy the gifts of friends, family, food, and fellowship without the underlying rush to wrap it all up in a single day. Christmas becomes a time to embrace the light that has come into the world, to truly enter into the “good news of great joy” that Advent has prepared us for.

Only nine more days until Christmas! Tonight a custom is celebrated all over the world which is known by many different names; La Posada (The Inn), Golden Nights, and Seeking Shelter. The events in the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem are commemorated at this time.

This is a beautiful tradition where villagers with candles sing and go door to door, seeking shelter for Mary and Joseph. They sing songs and pray as they are rejected night after night. Finally, on the last night of Las Posadas, Mary and Joseph are allowed into a chosen home. The figure of baby Jesus is laid in a manger and everyone gathers around and sings a lullaby. Then everyone pours back into the streets for firecrackers, feasting, and merrymaking.
