On Good Friday, we enter a period of profound reflection and reverence, pondering the immense weight of Christ’s sacrifice and the boundless depth of his love for us. Traditionally, in order to fully contemplate this pivotal moment in our salvation story, people fasted until after the Good Friday service.

In England, after the service, the fast was broken with Hot Cross Buns. They originated at Saint Alban’s Abbey in 1361 when the monks distributed them to the poor. The tradition spread to Christians throughout England and is the food associated with Good Friday to this day.

Maundy Thursday begins the sacred journey of the Easter Triduum (pronounced tree-do-um), the “Three Days” that span from sundown on Maundy Thursday to sundown on Easter Sunday. These are the holiest and most solemn days of the Christian year, drawing us into the heart of our faith.

On this night, we remember the Last Supper, the washing of the disciples’ feet, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, and Christ’s lonely vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane. It is a night filled with holy mystery, a quiet, reverent threshold into the power and sorrow of His Passion.

Knowing his hour had come, Jesus spent his final evening in intimate fellowship with his disciples, breaking bread, bending low to serve, and pouring out his love in word, action, and prayer.

Tomorrow is Holy Wednesday or Spy Wednesday.

Spy Wednesday is the Wednesday before Easter Sunday, commemorating the day that Judas Iscariot made a deal with the chief priests to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. It is called “Spy” Wednesday because Judas acted as a spy, secretly plotting to turn Jesus over to his enemies.

Fig Tuesday is almost here!

In the Gospel of Matthew and Mark, Jesus approaches a fig tree in hunger. Finding no figs, He curses it, and by the next day, it has withered. It’s a dramatic moment, not about produce but about fidelity. The fig tree becomes a living parable: a warning against empty religiosity and a call to bear the fruit of genuine faith.

Today is Palm Sunday!

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the holiest week of the liturgical year. During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus through his final days before his crucifixion. The tone of this week begins with joy as we remember his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Like the people in the Bible, we wave palm branches and shout “Hosanna,” proclaiming Jesus to be the “King of Kings.” We remember his ultimate victory over death. We also pray that we who bear these palm branches will “ever hail him as our King and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life” (Book of Common Prayer).

However, the day intertwines our joy with impending sorrow. The jubilation of Jesus’s arrival foreshadows the path to his crucifixion. We grow painfully aware of our fickle human nature, for the same voices that welcomed him at his coming would cry out for his crucifixion just a few days later. But we are also reminded of Jesus’s humility. He chose a path of peace and servitude over power and dominion, inviting us to reflect on the nature of true kingship and the kingdom of God.

Holy Week is almost here! Palm Sunday begins the week followed by Holy Monday.

According to the gospel of Matthew (Matthew 21:12-17), right after Jesus enters Jerusalem, he immediately goes to the temple. He drives out the money changers so it seems appropriate that the Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week are set aside for spring cleaning!

Here’s a great tradition for Palm Sunday, make Pax Cakes!

In England, in 1570, a local landowner grew frustrated with the parishioners in her church. They were not getting along with each other so she gave her priest money to buy shortbread cakes and ale to be consumed in church on Palm Sunday. Ha! The landowner hoped that the cakes and ale would ensure peace and reconciliation between neighbors before they took their Easter Communion the following Sunday.

These shortbread cookies are absolutely delicious and so easy to make! Y’all are gonna love them! And maybe they will bring a little bit of peace to your family!

After the long path of Lent, Holy Week invites us to walk with Christ through His Passion, death, and resurrection, not just by remembering what happened long ago, but by participating in it now, in real time. The Church gives us this week as a gift: not to rush through, but to dwell in.

One Easter symbol that often goes overlooked is the lamb. When I would see little stuffed lambs in the Easter section of our local store, I tended to think the symbol was about spring and new life. That’s partly true, but the lamb represents so much more.

The lamb represents Jesus, the lamb of God and our passover lamb, whose sacrifice takes away the sins of the world and reconciles us to God. So when we eat lamb on Easter, we are pointing to Christ and rejoicing in his gift to us!

Holy Week is almost here!

During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus through the final days before his crucifixion. We begin with joy as we remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. But soon we are reminded that the same voices that welcomed him at his coming would cry out for his crucifixion just a few days later.

Holy Week is a time of great sadness as we reflect on our own sin and our own rejection of Jesus as Lord of our lives

BUT it is also filled with a great hope because we know the whole story - that Jesus’ death is not final. We know that at the end of Holy Week comes Easter Sunday, the most glorious day of our lives! On this day, Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death forever and those that call upon his most precious name will be saved!

It’s almost Laetare Sunday, the half way point of Lent where there a lightening of the penitential mood and a turn towards the hope of Easter.

To celebrate the special day, make a Simnel cake! Traditionally, in England, they eat Simnel cakes (special fruitcakes) on Laetare Sunday.

Simnel Cake is a rich, moist cake filled with spices and dried fruits and decorated with marzipan (a ground almonds and sugar paste). The cake is decorated with eleven marzipan balls representing the eleven faithful apostles (excluding Judas).

Ingredients

½ cup candied cherries
3½ cups mixed dried fruit
12 tablespoons soft unsalted butter
1 cup superfine sugar
zest of 1 unwaxed lemon
1½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ cup almond meal
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons milk
2½ pounds of marzipan to decorate (recipe for marzipan at the bottom of the page)
confectioners’ sugar for rolling
1 tablespoon apricot jam (melted)
1 egg white (optional)

Another “No Meat Friday” is coming up! I thought it would be helpful to give you one of my family’s tried and true meatless recipes before Friday. That way you can shop and prepare ahead of time and you won’t have a panic attack as I do when I realize it’s Friday and I haven’t thought through what I am going to cook!

French Onion Soup during Lent is a family tradition of ours. We don’t make it every Friday but we do make it at least once during the season.

I was always intimidated by French Onion Soup. I thought it must be complicated to make but it is the easiest soup! The only thing that might be difficult is having stale bread on hand!

The soup’s flavor is rich and intense and when you add the homemade croutons and cheese, it’s absolutely incredible!

It’s a Meatless Friday in Lent!

And I am making . . . boxed fish sticks!

You heard that right. Fish sticks. From a big ole green box. And that is OK! We will mix up some tartar and cocktail sauce and call it good.

Following the seasons of the church is beautiful. Sometimes we will make elaborate, homemade things and sometimes we will tear open that box, pour those frozen sticks onto a pan and press “bake”.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

For those of you who are curious, every Friday throughout Lent, Christians around the world abstain from meat. We do this as a special fast to remember Good Friday, the day that Jesus died on the cross for our sins.

I love Fridays in Lent because they kick us out of our normal cooking routines and eating routines. We usually eat meat at dinnertime so it is a stretch for me to make a meatless meal. As I am stretched and in the midst of my mild discomfort, I am reminded of the incredible sacrifices that Jesus made for all of us his whole life.
