What in the world is the Daily Office?

The Daily Office is a beautiful set of prayers prayed for centuries at specific times of the day. It includes a recited Psalm, scripture reading, the Lord’s Prayer and the Canticles from Luke.

Praying them daily as a family connects us to the historic faith and to each other, grounds us in scripture, and nurtures deep spiritual formation.

Celebrate St. Bartholomew’s Day with watermelon!

In Italy and Spain, it was traditional to eat watermelon since watermelon was at the height of its season during this time. A watermelon festival was thrown on St. Bartholomew’s Day, and everyone gathered to celebrate the saint and enjoy the fruit.

There’s no easier way to celebrate than to go buy a watermelon, slice it up and enjoy with family and friends, all while giving thanks to a faithful disciple and martyr for Christ, St. Bartholomew!

The Feast of the Mother of Our Lord is coming up! A beautiful way to celebrate the day is with marigolds! The golden color of the marigold is said to symbolize the golden virtues of Mary, such as purity, love, humility, and obedience. What was once Mary’s Gold became shortened to Marigolds!

Celebrate by going to your local nursery and buying some marigold seeds or plants. Plant them in your yard or place the marigold plants on your kitchen table for the day. Go over with your kids the history and meaning behind this special flower and then say a prayer of thanks giving to St. Mary!

Tomorrow is The Feast of the Transfiguration! It’s a pivotal event where Jesus’ divinity is revealed. Peter recognized the significance of this event when he suggested that he make three tents for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah.

Celebrate this special day by making a “mountain” with three chocolate graham cracker tents! I added little Rosemary sprig “trees” for extra fun!

Pilgrims set forth, guided by humble faith and love for Jesus, to follow in the footsteps of saints, apostles, and martyrs. They hold a special place in the heart of our Christian heritage. Happy Feast of St. James! St. James was a faithful disciple of Jesus who spread the Good News throughout Spain. Many make pilgrimage to the special sight where he is buried. The route they take is known as The Camino de Santiago.

On July 25th, we celebrate St. James the Elder or James the Great. The “Elder” or “Great” is to set him apart from all the other Jameses listed in the Bible! 😂

St. James the Elder was a simple fisherman who, along with his brother John, was one of the first disciples chosen by Jesus. He was also among the three that Jesus would often take with him.

The Feast of Mary Magdalene is almost here! She was a faithful disciple who supported Jesus’ ministry and was there for his crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Since she was one of the women faithfully waiting to anoint the body of Jesus with myrrh and spices, she is known as one of the “Myrrh Bearers.” That’s why you’ll often see her depicted with a jar of myrrh and spices.

To celebrate her day, make something with lots of spices like this homemade chai tea!

My family loves this chai tea recipe. It is so good and so easy to make. Simply add equal parts chai and milk and then sweeten to taste. You’re family will love it!

The Feast of Mary Magdalene is almost here! Celebrate this special day by making red eggs!

According to legend, after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene traveled to Rome to share the Gospel with Emperor Tiberius. She gave the emperor an egg and explained to him that the egg was a perfect symbol of the resurrection of Jesus. The emperor was skeptical, responding that it was impossible for someone to rise from the dead, just as it was impossible for the egg in Mary Magdalene’s hand to turn red.

The egg miraculously turned red at that moment, shocking everyone who witnessed it. This miraculous event is said to have convinced the emperor of the truth of Mary Magdalene’s message, and he allowed her to continue her missionary work.

The Feast of Mary Magdalene is on July 22nd. It’s the day that the Church has set aside to honor a faithful disciple of Jesus.

I love feast days because it gives us the time to really look at an individual, to search the scriptures and to see things that we might have never seen before.

In Luke 8, we are told that Mary was a part of a group of women that traveled everywhere with Jesus and the disciples. And it says that they provided for Jesus and the disciples out of their own means.

Mary Magdalene is also revered as the “Apostle to the Apostles”(apostle means one who was sent) because she is the one who was sent to share the Good News of the resurrection with the disciples.

I love knowing all of these things about Mary Magdalene! What an incredible woman and what an amazing example she is for us today!

What’s the biggest misconception about liturgical living? That it’s just for families with kids!

There’s a common misconception that celebrating the liturgical year is primarily for families with young children, a practice filled with crafts, songs, and activities meant to teach little ones about faith.

While it’s true that involving children in liturgical traditions can be deeply enriching, the beauty and depth of liturgical living extend far beyond this narrow view.

Liturgical living is for everyone – whether you’re single, a widow or widower, grandparents, empty nesters, or unable to have children. The liturgical year is a rhythm of life meant to be embraced by all.
